Big Medium 2: A CMS for Web designers
Josh Clark sent an e-mail to us the other day saying that his Web content management system, Big Medium 2, is availabe for public consumption. While he sent the usual press release, I thought I'd go ahead and paste his full e-mail to me. Sometimes it's good to note that it's not just a "company" pushing a product but instead to actually see the people developing the software pushing their own products.
Bryan,First off, thanks for all you do. You offer such terrific coverage of the CMS space and the challenges facing practitioners. Super-professional but with a personal feel. I love it.
I posted a comment on one of your posts introducing Big Medium 2 a couple of months ago and now, at long last, it's out of beta. I'm passing along the press release below in hopes that you'll find it of interest to your readers. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions, and thanks again.
All best,
Josh
PARIS, DEC 17, 2007 -- Josh Clark and Global Moxie announced the release of Big Medium 2, a web content management system aimed squarely at web designers.
Big Medium 2 has all of the features you should expect of a content
management system (version control, workflow, search engine, content
syndication, granular editing privileges, Unicode support) but also lots of
grace notes for content sites: Pullquotes, image galleries, podcasts,
scheduled publication, visitor comments, a WYSIWYG CSS style editor and
other goodies.
Big Medium 2 is geared for designers who want a CMS that enables extremely
flexible designs but remains easy to set up without programming skills. The
software does not impose cookie-cutter layouts: If you bring basic to
intermediate HTML/CSS know-how, Big Medium can manage just about any design
you throw at it.
Once the designer configures the templates, he or she can hand the site
over to content editors; no technical know-how is required to add or edit
pages. Big Medium's friendly, humane interface is easy and non-threatening
for CMS newbies. Enter your text, images, podcasts and document downloads
into Big Medium's editor, and the software automagically adds the necessary
links and pages to your site.
## Server requirements
Big Medium's modest server requirements allow you to install it in nearly
any hosting environment. Big Medium is a Perl application and runs on
Unix-based or Windows servers with Perl 5.6.1 or higher.
## Pricing
Big Medium is $185 per server installation (each install can manage an
unlimited number of sites and user accounts, no extra fees). It's free to
try for 30 days, and it's also a free upgrade for all current Big Medium
customers.

The softer side of software
Many thanks for helping to spread the word, Bryan -- and for the reminder of the personal aspect of indie software development. It sounds touchy-feely, I know, but I think that one of the things my customers like best about Big Medium is the direct and personal interaction they have with the developer.
It certainly goes both ways: the product has benefited enormously from my being on the front lines of customer service, connecting with customers on a daily basis to understand their needs and challenges.
Thanks again, and keep up the great work,
Josh
